Liverpool player ratings v Man United – Andy Robertson stuns as 3/10 is horrific

Liverpool suffered a major blow to their title hopes after rivals Man United secured a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon (7 April).

Luis Diaz opened the score with a cooly-taken finish inside the box, but the Red Devils completely changed their tune after the break and took the game to Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Bruno Fernandes capitalised on a horror pass from youngster Jarell Quansah and scored a sublime long-range strike in the 50th minute before Kobbie Mainoo put United ahead with a curled effort 17 minutes later.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka then gave away a penalty in the 84th minute, which was predictably scored by superstar Mohamed Salah.

Football Insider has analysed the Liverpool starting line-up’s performance after their thriller at Old Trafford.

PLAYER RATINGS

Caoimhin Kelleher [6]

Could do very little to stop Fernandes’ screamer in the opening minutes of the second half or Mainoo’s effort minutes later. With two saves, one punch and two clearances, he won’t be taking any blame for Liverpool’s failure to win the game.

Andy Robertson [9]

His exceptional positioning and timing of his runs allowed Dias to thrive. His four key passes were deadly and if his attackers had their shooting boots on in the first half, he could have earned a boatload of assists. The Reds’ best defender.

Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk [6]

Kept strong in the opening 45 minutes, but failed to stop the sudden onslaught of Man United’s attack in the second half. His distribution was key, having secured 93 per cent pass accuracy, but he lost possession three times in dangerous areas to offer their rivals a route back.

Jarell Quansah [5]

Dropped the worst attempted pass of the game which gifted Fernandes the chance to score his remarkable long-range strike. The relatively inexperienced centre-back will no doubt learn from his woeful mistake and he was otherwise quite assured on the ball, managing 89 per cent pass accuracy. Liverpool fans will care little for that, however.

Conor Bradley [4]

His forward play was, as expected, very well executed, but he was caught out by the pace of Marcus Rashford on a few too many occasions. If the Red Devils had more sharpness to their game, the youngster could have paid. He managed no accurate crosses and was dribbled past once. Far below expectations.

Alexis Mac Allister [8]

Dynamic performance from the Argentine. His frequent tackling was only bested by his exceptional passing play. He managed one key pass, 86 per cent pass accuracy and five successful ground duels. Everywhere.

Liverpool

Wataru Endo [5]

As soon as Klopp hauled the Japan international off the field, the Reds went 2-1 down. Endo could boast one key pass, 50 touches and 79 per cent pass accuracy, but often struggled against United’s aggressive second-half press. Mixed display.

Dominik Szoboszlai [3]

The Hungary international missed two big chances in the opening 45 minutes and his second half was not any better. He had plenty of the ball but did very little with it and was hauled off after 65 minutes. Three key passes were his highlight, but the typically excellent midfielder was way off the pace.

Luis Diaz [8]

Bagged the opening goal with a well-taken strike to bring his overall tally to 13 in all competitions. Was a persistent threat to United’s backline, but like the rest of his attacking teammates, was not clinical enough across the game. He managed six total shots and one big chance created and, despite the disappointment, was their best attacker.

Mohamed Salah [4]

Was kept very quiet throughout the game but still had some chances to put the game to bed. He managed four shots across the 90 but squandered a brilliant chance in the 79th minute with a close-range strike which flew over the bar. Far below the legend’s typically world-class standards, despite converting his penalty well.

Darwin Nunez [6]

A typically chaotic performance from the striker. One moment he would beat his man with ease, the next he would miss a sitter – most notably in the 54th minute when he was one-on-one with Andre Onana. He offered a dangerous outlet up top, but managed just six accurate passes.
