Liverpool poised to sign Wataru Endo replacement after source’s reveal
Liverpool are plotting to sign a new defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
It is believed the Reds have made a deal to strengthen the core of their midfield a top priority as the Arne Slot era gets underway at Anfield.
Slot and new Liverpool director of football Richard Hughes started work over the weekend following the departure of legendary boss Jurgen Klopp at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.
Chief among their plans for the summer transfer window, which opens on 14 June, is the signing of a new defensive midfield star.
Wataru Endo arrived at Anfield last summer (2023) following the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, joining from Stuttgart for a reported fee of around £16million.

But a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Endo was only seen as a stop-gap by club chiefs – and plans are now in place to sign a marquee new midfield star.
2023 signing Alexis Mac Allister was also forced to play in an unfamiliar defensive midfield role throughout his first season at Liverpool.
Endo made 43 appearances in his first year with the Reds, starting in 34 of those outings.

Liverpool finished third in the Premier League in the 2023-24 campaign and also won the League Cup against Chelsea in February.
Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Adrian are out of contract later this month.
