Kieran Maguire: Liverpool priming ‘their attack dogs’ amid historic Downing Street news
Liverpool will be priming their “attack dogs” to try and water down the powers of an independent regulator for English football.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the reaction in the Liverpool boardroom to the latest news from Downing Street.
As relayed by the Daily Mail last Saturday (10 December), the government is set to approve the introduction of an independent regulator at some point in 2023.
The body, which will safeguard the interests of fans as well as enforce financial and sustainability rules, was one of the measures proposed in Tracey Crouch MP’s Fan-Led Review of Football Governance last November.
The rolling out of an independent regulator is set to be one of the most significant changes to the fabric of English football for decades.
But Maguire suggests that Liverpool will continue to try and blunt its effectiveness behind the scenes.
“Liverpool and the rest of the Big Six club will no doubt be using their attack dogs to try and discredit, dent and delay the white paper should it be published,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“If an independent regulator is introduced then expect to see FSG, if they are still in charge, try and make sure this will be a toothless tiger.

“This is not something they want to worry about interfering with their business in what they consider to be a valuable franchise.
“If another American owner takes over, they are not normally keen on any form of scrutiny.“
