Liverpool: Richard Hughes to ‘triple his salary’ in Saudi Arabia as three-man shortlist emerges

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes could earn up to three times his salary if he completes a move to Saudi Arabia.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there would also be tax benefits for the Anfield chief.

Football Insider revealed on 19 March Hughes is on a three-man shortlist to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli.

Meanwhile, fellow Saudi side Al-Hilal are also believed to be interested in taking the 46-year-old to the Middle East.

Hughes has been spearheading Liverpool’s transfer strategy since making the move to Anfield from Bournemouth in 2024.

How Middle East conflict could impact Richard Hughes’ decision

Hughes has come under pressure following Liverpool’s heavy spending last summer, with some of their signings so far failing to live up to their billing on Merseyside.

Arne Slot’s side forked out more than £400million on new additions, including the Premier League record £125m deal for Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed how much Hughes could earn in Saudi Arabia.

“Well, financially of course they’ll pay him two to three times probably what he’s on, and his tax will be a lot less if he stays there for the requisite amount,” said Borson.

“But of course, everything’s changed now in terms of Saudi Arabia and the whole of the GCC right now. I think it’s going to be much harder for them to recruit from the West right now.

“Maybe they’ll say that he can work remotely, I don’t know. But the whole picture has changed. The money might be good, but there’s more to life than the money. I would think it’s unlikely he’s going to go to Al-Hilal, but people have different risk appetites.”

Why Hughes could face questions over Liverpool signings

While last summer’s signings appeared to be inspired on paper, Liverpool have gone backwards this season.

Slot’s side currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, having claimed the title last season.

However, the Reds are into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the FA Cup, with ties against PSG and Man City coming up next month.

Although fingers will largely be pointed at Slot if Liverpool fail to claim any silverware this season, Hughes is also likely to come under fire for the club’s transfer business.
