Finance guru: Liverpool rivalling ‘Barcelona and Real Madrid’ amid ‘incredible’ claim

Liverpool are closing in on the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the commercial stakes – and their success in the department is driven by their “incredible” performance on the pitch.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Merseysiders’ impressive commercial operation.

Liverpool trousered £217.6million in commercial income during the 2020-21 season, the last recorded financial year.

Their revenue from sponsorship and merchandising has risen in line with their success on the pitch in recent times, with six major additions to their silverware cabinet in the last four years.

The club are now on the lookout for a new data analyst to drive insights for their commercial department, per a job advert posted earlier this month (12 August).

Plumley explained how the rise of their commercial fortunes could soon see them catch up with some of the biggest sides in Europe.

“The great thing about commercial revenue is that there is no upper limit,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“It will, however, be capped by sporting performance and other factors.

“If you look at where Liverpool are compared to four or five years ago, they have generated an extra £100m commercial revenue that has put them level or even a little bit ahead of the likes of Man United.

“They are also starting to catch Man City, who have very much raised the bar. It’s all about how far you can stretch it, and their sporting performance has been incredible.

In Europe, they are closing the gap to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“But it always depends on on-pitch performance. We have seen this with United, for example. They have dropped off partly because of the issues around the ownership but also because they aren’t challenging for the title every year.

“So. there is room for growth for Liverpool but they have to stay at the top to keep that going.”
