Finance guru salutes Liverpool as 16 ‘historic’ deals agreed

The new Liverpool supporter board will have a real opportunity to influence club strategy.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the new mechanism to give supporters a say in the running of the club.

Liverpool revealed in December last year that they planned to launch a fan board in line with the recommendations of Tracey Crouch MP’s Fan-Led Review of Football Governance.

The Merseysiders announced last Wednesday (17 August) that they have now become the first Premier League side to formalise fan involvement at executive level.

Contracts have been signed for 16 fan representatives to sit on the board in what the club labelled a “historic moment”.

Plumley assessed how much real power the new boardroom faction will have.

“I think they’ll have a chance to have a real say in things,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams

“The devil will then be in the detail in terms of how that translates into real impact on decision making. But it’s a good idea.

“We have seen this in the fan-led and in terms of what might be coming down the track in English football, so broadly speaking it is a really positive thing.

“There is likely to be some real influence there and it brings the fans and the board closer, which is really important.

“Exactly how much this will affect things at the decision-making level is still up in the air, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
