Finance guru salutes Liverpool as new deal struck – ‘this is a big deal’

Liverpool deserve credit for the way they have approached the controversial topic of NFT sponsorship.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Merseysiders’ latest global commercial deal.

Liverpool announced last Thursday (22 September) that they had expanded their partnership with NFT-based fantasy football game Sorare.

The pair first linked up as far back as January 2021, and the club have since made further inroads into the NFT industry.

They auctioned off a range of club-branded NFTs in March, raking in £1.1million in the process.

Critics of the unique digital assets argue that they are speculative investments that have an unjustifiable carbon footprint.

But Plumley claims that the Reds have conducted themselves responsibly when it comes to NFTs.

“When you look at it moving to a global partnership with the branding that comes with it, that indicates that it’s going to be a big deal for the club moving forward,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“The NFT auction didn’t hit the heights the club wanted but, if we look at the positives, at least they consulted with the fans on it. It was quite transparent. If the buy-up wasn’t particularly there, that is something the club can reflect on.

“So there were some positives to take from it. If this is going to be a big thing moving forward, Liverpool are in a position to capitalise on it with this partnership.

“It is still a bit of an unknown quantity, but it will be an interesting one to keep an eye on.”
