Liverpool set for January ‘bidding war’ after source’s ‘box-office’ signing reveal – pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Liverpool could find themselves in a January “bidding war” if they choose to add to their squad in the winter window.
However, the former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed new additions are key to Jurgen Klopp’s side securing a top-four Premier League finish.
Football Insider revealed earlier this month (9 October) that Klopp has green-lit the signing of a new first-team-ready midfielder in January.

It is understood that the potential signing could even be a “box-office” player amid interest in Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.
Injury-hit Liverpool have endured their worst start on record during Klopp‘s seven-year Anfield reign – and are in danger of missing out on the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign.
The Merseysiders sit eighth in the Premier League after picking up 16 points from their first 11 games.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think it’s about risk and reward.
“They know that if they spend money in January, they’ll be paying over the odds. We know how difficult a window it is – teams are always reluctant to let their best players go.
“But it depends where they want to finish in the league.
“It could become a bidding war for players. If they want to finish in those top four places, then they’ve got to put that money out there.”

Liverpool have had to contend with injuries to the likes of Ibrahima Konate, Naby Keita, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz.
Darwin Nunez was the Reds’ only big-ticket summer signing, while Fabio Carvalho, Calvin Ramsay, and Arthur Melo came in to bolster the ranks.
