Liverpool ‘set sights’ on Premier League star after Mohamed Salah reveal

Liverpool are considering reigniting their long-term interest in Anthony Gordon as they aim to bolster their attacking options in case Mohamed Salah leaves.

Reports have suggested Gordon is growing more likely to leave St James’ Park this summer after what has proven to be a frustrating season so far.

While the 24-year-old prefers to play on the left, he would strengthen Arne Slot‘s front three and allow another option to fill in on the right-hand side.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Gordon could become available as Newcastle aim to cash in after his underwhelming displays.

The England international’s stock remains high despite his downturn in performances, but there is a feeling at Liverpool that he would thrive in a more attacking side.

Liverpool set sights on Anthony Gordon deal

Brown told Football Insider on 19 January that Newcastle could accept big offers for Gordon, with Liverpool and Arsenal tipped as front-runners for his signature.

Slot’s side have been long-term admirers, while the winger is believed to be a boyhood Liverpool fan, placing them in pole position to agree terms.

There’s every chance Liverpool could look at Gordon again,” Brown told Football Insider.

“There’s been talk about it on and off for years, they’re big admirers of his and if he’s available, I expect they will be among the clubs having a look.

“Personally I have doubts about his record, he doesn’t score enough goals and he hasn’t looked the same player this year when I’ve watched Newcastle.

“But Liverpool might feel he is a good fit for the way they play and would be better suited in a more dominant and attacking side.

“He would be a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah if he is going to move on.

“I know they don’t play on the same side, but he would add a new option and allow other players to move around, so it’s certainly a possibility.

“For Newcastle, what I’ve said about his performances is exactly the reason I think they could let him go, because he isn’t meeting expectations for them.

“If they can sell him while his stock is high, they can go out and sign a replacement with the money.”

Mohamed Salah edges closer to Saudi Pro League move

Speculation about a potential move for Gordon comes amid doubts over Salah’s future, with a growing feeling he could move on at the end of the season.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 15 February that Salah is expected to leave Liverpool come the summer despite his scintillating display against Brighton.

After what has been a difficult spell for the Egypt international, he turned in a fantastic performance and scored in their 3-0 FA Cup victory.

Sources say an exit is still likely going into the summer window, when he will have just a year left on the mega-money contract he signed last year.

The interest from the Saudi Pro League remains strong as they plan to make him the face of the money-spinning league to replace exit-bound Cristiano Ronaldo.
