Liverpool defender in line for January exit amid PL interest – report

Jon Flanagan looks set for an exit from Liverpool in January as the long-serving defender looks to resurrect his career after several injury setbacks, according to a report.

The Sun claim that Reds stalwart Flanagan could seek an early exit from Anfield, with the academy graduate’s contract set to expire in the summer.

The 24-year-old was loaned to Burnley last season and struggled to make an impact at Turf Moor, but it is said that the Clarets may come back in for the right-back in January.

Liverpool-born Flanagan made his debut for the Reds in 2011 after coming through the academy, and impressed initially under Brendan Rodgers.

A serious knee injury that required two operations has hampered him since, and he has failed to force his way into first-team contention under Jurgen Klopp this season.

Football Insider verdict:

It will be a shame to see Flanagan exit Anfield after many years of loyal service, but the right-back is still young and needs to move away to progress his career. He has stalled at the Reds in recent times after his injury, and his failed loan to Burnley was another disappointment. His performances under Rodgers when he first broke into the first team show his potential, as he held down the right-back position so well for a seriously good side. There will surely be Premier League interest for the 24-year-old, who still has a lot to offer if he can overcome his recent injury setbacks.

In other Liverpool news, the Reds have secured a deal for a young defender who has blown Steven Gerrard away.
