Diogo Jota could be ‘out for three months’ after ‘devastating’ new Liverpool blow – expert

Liverpool star Diojo Jota will be out for months if he has completely torn his hamstring.

That is according to ex-Leeds United striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the potential extent of the injury sustained by the Portugese on Sunday.

Jota, 25, was stretchered off in added time of the tumultuous 1-0 win over Man City at Anfield after seeming to overstretch when flicking the ball on.

Manager Jurgen Klopp revealed afterwards he did not know yet how the serious the injury is other than confirming that the forward will not play against West Ham on Wednesday night in the team’s next match.

“We miss the next one with Diogo. He felt real pain in that moment but I have no idea how bad it is. If Diogo stays down it is not good,” Klopp told Sky Sports straight after the match.

Jota’s energy and dynamism on the left flank had been instrumental in his team’s win on Sunday.

He not only played a key attacking role but also dropped back to help Andy Robertson contain Joao Cancelo and Kevin De Bruyne on the right flank.

“The scans on the injury will tell the Liverpool medical team how serious it is,” Whelan told Football Insider. “It depends if it’s a minor muscle strain or a full tear. A partial tear of the muscle and you’re looking at a few weeks, probably three weeks.

“A full tear and you can be out for three months. That would be devastating for Liverpool, especially with Luis Diaz already out for that amount of time.

“Jota is a big player for Liverpool and offers a huge amount going forward. They can’t afford to be without another key goalscorer.

“Fingers crossed for him, but it’s not looking good if he can’t walk off”.
