Liverpool stars react to Omar Marmoush’s new Man City message
Manchester City will hope Omar Marmoush can continue his strong Premier League form as their Club World Cup campaign gets underway.
Pep Guardiola‘s side went without silverware last season for the first time since his maiden campaign at the Etihad Stadium in 2016–17, but FIFA’s revamped tournament provides Man City with a silver lining.
The Club World Cup is already underway in the USA with the Blues one of the last teams to take the field, as Man City look to make up for their trophyless season by collecting over £90million in prize money.
City haven’t wasted time in adding to their squad ahead of the tournament with Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders signed for a combined £112m, and all three will hope to make an immediate impact.
Man City ‘en route’ as Club World Cup matches begin
City’s already-significant spend so far this summer follows a January transfer window in which Guardiola sanctioned five new arrivals and spent over £175m to do so, with Marmoush the most successful so far.
The Egyptian netted seven Premier League goals in 16 appearances after his £59m move from Eintracht Frankfurt, and his strike against Bournemouth in Man City’s penultimate match won ‘Goal of the Season’.
Marmoush is expected to start alongside Erling Haaland and potentially Cherki in City’s first Club World Cup match against Wydad Casablanca, and he posted on Instagram (17 June) ahead of their opener.
The 26-year-old’s post was liked by both Haaland and his former Stuttgart team-mate Wataru Endo, and said: “En route [to the] FIFA Club World Cup”.
Marmoush to stake permanent Man City claim
Man City’s squad overhaul has already been set in motion by the acquisitons of Ait-Nouri, Cherki, Reijnders and back-up goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea, but outgoings aplenty are expected.
Although Kevin De Bruyne’s exit to Napoli has already been confirmed, the likes of Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish have also been heavily linked with moves away as the latter falls further out of favour.
Grealish’s absence from City’s Club World Cup squad leaves all signs pointing towards the exit door, and that can only be good news for Marmoush has he looks to establish a permanent spot in Guardiola’s XI.
