Liverpool submitting new Anthony Gordon bid after swap talks – sources
Liverpool are preparing a fresh approach for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon after a breakdown in talks over a swap deal, sources have told Football Insider.
If talks progress quickly, it is believed Gordon could even undergo a medical whilst in Leipzig with the England squad for Euro 2024.
It is understood that Liverpool initially enquired to Newcastle about the Three Lions international, but Newcastle were only interested in doing business if Jarell Quansah could move to St. James’ Park as part of the deal.
The Reds, under the new reign of Arne Slot, do not want to lose Quansah from their squad and only wish to sign Gordon on a straight purchase agreement.
Eddie Howe’s side are desperate not to lose Gordon, who has starred since signing in a £45m deal from Everton 18 months ago, but Frank McAvennie told Football Insider [18 May] that he is among one of several key men in the Newcastle squad who the club may have to sell by 30 June to meet PSR criteria.
Gordon – who hails from Liverpool – was released by the club as an 11-year-old and moved to cross-city rivals Everton, where he turned professional.
Liverpool pressuring Newcastle for Gordon deal
Liverpool have secured a return to the Champions League next season as the club begin life after Jurgen Klopp, and want to attract players such as Gordon to maintain a smooth transition whilst Newcastle have missed out on European competition for 2024-25.
The player is anticipated to be open to the deal, but the Magpies will want to ensure a tidy profit after the winger scooped the Player of the Season award at the club in his first full term – scoring 11 goals and claiming 10 assists.
Gordon is a key cog in the Newcastle machine for Howe, who will also be hugely disappointed should the club be forced to sell Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes in the next 24 hours.

Quansah enjoyed a breakthrough season at Anfield in 2023-24 with 33 senior appearances and a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad, and the Reds feel they must keep the defender around.
The PSR deadline on 30 June has exhibited itself as an alternative “deadline day” for English clubs, who are scrambling to meet guidelines in order to avoid sanctions such as points deductions.
