Kieran Maguire: Klopp left in ‘impossible position’ by Liverpool chiefs as new details emerge

Liverpool chiefs are guilty of “hiding” behind Jurgen Klopp throughout their handling of the recent false positive drama.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest emerging details in the saga.

Liverpool were due to play Arsenal in the League Cup on 6 January but had the clash rescheduled because of a would-be Covid outbreak in their camp.

But as quoted by BBC Sport on 9 January, Klopp claimed there had been a “lot of false positives.”

The Athletic reported on Thursday (20 January) that Klopp had used the wrong terminology in his assessment of the incident.

But Maguire argues that Klopp has been hung out to dry by the Merseyside club’s executives.

“People behind the scenes at clubs can sometimes hide behind managers,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“We saw with Super League that managers were effectively in an impossible position.

“Liverpool used, in good faith, a lab that wasn’t very accurate and decisions were made on the back of that.

“It would have made more sense if the club had come out with a detailed press release explaining the situation.

“Instead, they left Jurgen Klopp, who is a man of decency, to take the brunt of a lot of trolling on social media.”

Liverpool ultimately prevailed over Arsenal in a 2-0 aggregate win.

They are set to face Chelsea in the League Cup final on 27 February.
