Liverpool duo respond as Tommy Watson shares emotional Sunderland message

Tommy Watson took to social media to share his delight after clinching the winner for Sunderland in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the Championship playoff final.

Regis Le Bris’ men successfully overturned a one-goal deficit to book their spot in next season’s Premier League as Eliezer Mayenda scored the equaliser before Watson’s finish snatched a famous victory at Wembley.

The 19-year-old Watson is joining Brighton ahead of next season, but he has successfully departed the Stadium of Light on good terms by scoring the goal that sent Sunderland back to the Premier League.

Watson’s goal ensured that the Black Cats will be playing in the top tier for the first time since their relegation to the Championship in 2017.

Liverpool duo Jayden Danns and Lewis Koumas respond to Watson’s Sunderland message

Jayden Danns joined Sunderland on loan from Liverpool during the winter transfer window, but his move to the North East did not go to plan courtesy of a back injury, meaning he failed to make a Black Cats appearance.

Arne Slot’s men are looking to bolster their ranks after winning the Premier League title, while football finance expert Dan Plumley told Liverpool News that the Reds are ready to sign Florian Wirtz.

Meanwhile, after winning the Championship playoff final for the Mackems, Watson celebrated on Instagram [25 May] as he wrote: “A day I won’t forget! Back Where We Belong.”

Danns commented: “Quality” while fellow Liverpool youngster Lewis Koumas shared his appreciation by leaving a heart-eye emoji alongside a clapping hands emoji in the comments section.

Sunderland must have a successful summer transfer window

Sunderland have done incredibly well to clinch promotion back to the Premier League in Le Bris’ first term at the Stadium of Light, which has also been his first campaign in the English game.

After eight difficult seasons below the top flight, including four years in League One, the North East giants have finally clinched promotion back to where they feel they belong.

Wes Brown exclusively told Mackem News how impressed he has been by the Stadium of Light faithful in recent weeks, while Sunderland fans will now be treated to Premier League football next season.

But Le Bris’ young Black Cats squad lacks top-flight experience, and the North East outfit will have to utilise the summer transfer window to help bridge the gap between the top tier and the Championship.

Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League could help the Stadium of Light side retain the likes of Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham, but they must also recruit well.
