Kieran Maguire: Liverpool bag £487m and poised to rocket past Man United after new deals ‘signed’

Liverpool are poised to overtake arch-rivals Man United in terms of annual revenue.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Merseysiders’ annual report.

The figures, released today (25 February), revealed that Liverpool made a £4.8million loss on total revenues of £494m for the 2020-21 season.

Annual turnover was down £3m on the previous year as the effects of the pandemic manifested themselves.

United posted a £39m loss on revenues of £494m over the same period.

Liverpool are closing the gap on United thanks to their superior sporting performance, claims Maguire.

“They are impressive results,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Result have always got to be taken with a degree of caution as there are some technical reasons for the changes as far as revenue is concerned.

“But overall, these results are as good if not better than would have been expected. Those annual revenue figures in a Covid year are very encouraging.

“There is scope for growth as far as commercial is concerned. The interesting thing is that Liverpool are very, very close to overtaking Man United.

“United are £494m and Liverpool are £487m. Liverpool are showing that if you are successful on the pitch, that will be a financial benefit.

“The Nike deal is really going to benefit the club this season. They have also signed quite a few broader deals.

“With those factors taken into account, I would anticipate very significant growth in 2021-22.”

Liverpool

Liverpool’s commercial revenue remained steady at £217.6m for the financial year.

Matchday revenue meanwhile fell dramatically, from £70m to £3m over the accounting period.
