Kieran Maguire: Liverpool to be ‘held to account’ after ‘magnificent’ behind-the-scenes update

The Liverpool board will be “held to account” by the new supporter panel – but don’t expect to see changes in the day-to-day running of the club.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the powers of the newly-established check on owner power.

Liverpool announced in December last year that they were drawing up blueprints for a new fan board in line with the recommendations of Tracey Crouch MP’s Fan-Led Review of Football Governance.

The club revealed last Wednesday (17 August) that the 16-member board, which will have the power to stop constitutional changes such as club colour changes, is now formally active.

They are the first Premier League side to implement fan involvement at executive level in what their media team described as a “historic moment”.

Liverpool were one of the first clubs to sign up to the aborted Super League plot last April, a move which was greeted with fury by fans.

Maguire explained how much control the new board will have to prevent similar attempts in the future.

“The intention is not to get involved with day-to-day running at Liverpool or any other club,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“The aim is to hold clubs to account for their boardroom actions. There are magnificent groups such as Spirit of Shankly who have been successful in doing that.

“They represent what it means to be a Liverpool fan. Sometimes the owners might forget what that means.

“We can’t forget that sometimes the club has acted in ways that supporters will consider to be inappropriate.”
