Kieran Maguire: Liverpool could rake it in as new US plan analysed – ‘This’ll go down a storm’

Liverpool could rake it in if Uefa pushes ahead with plans to take a new four-team mini-tournament outside of Europe.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about European football’s ruling body and their attempts to broaden their revenue base.

Uefa are devising plans for a four-team curtain-raiser to kick off the European season, per Associated Press on Wednesday (11 May).

It is understood that the event could take place outside of Europe and that the United States is among the most desirable destinations.

Liverpool have close ties with the US because of their Boston-based owners, Fenway Sports Group.

Maguire discussed possible destinations for the proposed new tournament, which he insists would be lucrative for individual clubs.

“I think the issue with the Middle East is the climate,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“We have had to move the World Cup in Qatar from the summer to the winter. If they did it in an air-conditioned stadium, that could work.

“However, I still think logistical and environmental issues would make it more of a challenge.

“But the US would be attractive and I’m certain it would go down an absolute storm in Asia as well. Individual clubs would see the rewards of that too, of course.”

Uefa has also given the green light to a new format for the Champions League, with four more teams joining from 2024.

It is claimed that places in the four-team mini-tournament would be awarded based on Champions League performance.
