Kieran Maguire: ‘Sky is the limit’ for Liverpool amid business reveal – ‘it changes everything’

The “sky is the limit” for Liverpool if the Premier League decide to let clubs sell the rights to stream their own matches.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the long-mooted possibility of the top-flight launching an OTT broadcast service.

Liverpool wanted the chance to sell their own rights when they co-authored the Project Big Picture and European Super League breakaway plots in October 2020 and April 2021 respectively.

As quoted by The Athletic last Wednesday (3 August), Premier League CEO Richard Masters revealed that the possibility of a direct-to-consumer streaming service has been discussed within the organisation.

Masters suggested that they already have the option to convert some of their long-term overseas broadcast deals into this model.

Key to how lucrative the proposed new model might be for Liverpool, claims Maguire, is whether individual clubs would be able to sell the rights on their own terms.

These comments are certainly interesting,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“The biggest decision in football broadcasting will be whether the Premier League is going to be selling the rights on behalf of all the clubs or if we are going to move to something similar like we see in the EFL.

“In iFollow, individual clubs sell individual packages. If that is the case, the sky is the limit for Liverpool in terms of what they can generate in revenue.

“It would change everything. However, it would also have a detrimental impact on the rest of the Premier League.”
