Finance guru: Liverpool to rip up contract policy after game-changing development

Liverpool could overhaul their contract negotiation policy in response to the Premier League’s new five substitutes rule.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the first matchday with the new substitute allowance in place.

The Daily Mail reported back in March that Premier League clubs would be allowed to make two extra changes from 2022-23, and the league confirmed soon after.

Jurgen Klopp brought four players off the bench in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Fulham last Saturday (6 August).

The quartet – Fabio Carvalho, James Milner, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott – will likely have picked up appearance bonuses thanks to clauses in their contracts.

Plumley suggests that the freedom to make more substitutes may mean appearance bonuses are reduced accordingly.

“It’s definitely an option to adjust the way they approach contracts and it would be at the clubs’ discretion,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“It wouldn’t make too much of a difference in terms of overall cost but it is something that does now come into the mix.

“We could be looking at situations where you differentiate between a full appearance and a substitute appearance, with time cut-offs etcetera in that.

“The nature of appearance bonuses might change a little bit. It adds a little bit of complexity to new deals and negotiations in that area.

“But with wage structure, you’re probably not going to see too much change. But yes, I do think the likes of Liverpool will consider it.”
