Liverpool to sign A-list midfielder – Wyness: ‘they want the finished product’

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has claimed Liverpool will be looking for the “finished product” as they search for a new number six to kickstart the Arne Slot era.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Liverpool are in the market for an “experienced” midfielder rather than a young wonderkid.

The Premier League giants are the only club in Europe’s top five leagues yet to sign a first-team player this transfer window.

Football Insider revealed on 3 August that Liverpool are working on multiple deals – including for a wide forward, a defensive midfielder, and a central defender.

Japan international Wataru Endo is the club’s only natural senior defensive midfielder after they missed out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea last summer.

Liverpool still looking for ‘finished product’ in defensive midfield, says Wyness

The lack of transfer activity has Liverpool fans worried as the club enters what is likely to be a period of transition under Slot.

Speaking on Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast Wyness said: “I think they’re going to try and get the finished product, that’s what I’m hearing.

“The number six is a very important position for them. There was also talk of (Marc) Guehi going to Newcastle, don’t discount Liverpool for that position too.

“Liverpool will be in the market for a very experienced, high quality, and probably mid-twenties type of player that has played at a very high level.

“This isn’t going to be a youth project for them, this is going to be where a part of their money is going to go.”
