Liverpool to ‘spend big’ on A-list stars for ‘high’ prices – Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Liverpool will spend big on multiple “experienced, quality players” rather than turning to youth this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested several of the Reds’ “older” players will be allowed to leave by manager-elect Arne Slot.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (27 April) that Liverpool have agreed to pay Feyenoord nearly £10million in compensation to bring Slot to Anfield.

It is believed that the Dutchman’s attacking style, his personality and ability to develop players are key factors in making him a top choice for the job.

He will replace Jurgen Klopp, who has faltered in the final part of this season with Liverpool at one point in contention for a quadruple.

Wyness expects dramatic ‘turnaround’ at Liverpool in summer window

Wyness warned Fenway Sports Group won’t “go wild” – but will certainly back their new man in the transfer market.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Liverpool will want to evaluate the home-grown and academy stars which came through a couple of months ago.

“Things haven’t gone to plan since then, so they are going to have to work out which players can make the step up.

“There are going to be some big issues with this current squad, and Arne Slot will have his own opinions.

“By all accounts, he wants a high-pressing, heavy-metal style of football.

“There will have to be some big spending at Liverpool, and it will have to be on experienced, quality players – even if they come with a higher price tag.

Liverpool

“I do expect a few of the older stars to go, and a bit of a turnaround at Liverpool.

“FSG have been quite prudent owners. I don’t think they’ll go wild, but there will be spending.”
