Liverpool to spend just '£50m' on Darwin Nunez as 'phenomenal' claim made - pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Darwin Nunez will cost Liverpool a net fee of just “£50million” this summer.

The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Reds will offset part of the 22-year-old’s transfer fee and all of his wages through the exits of Sadio Mane and Divock Origi.

After Football Insider revealed on Friday (10 June) Liverpool were in talks over a £80million-plus deal, Benfica confirmed on Monday (13 June) the two clubs have agreed terms worth a potential £85million (€100million) to sign Nunez.

The Reds will pay an initial £64million, with the rest of the transfer fee made up of add-ons and bonuses.

With Origi leaving on a free and Bayern Munich reportedly chasing the signing of Mane, Whelan believes Liverpool have covered a large portion of the costs of signing Nunez.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “They had to counteract Manchester City with an out-and-out striker. They’ve not had it for a long time, either side.

“Now that Man City have gone all out for that out and out number nine, I think they’re doing the right thing. Yes, they’re going to lose Mane, yes, they’re losing Origi so that frees up some wages in terms of bringing him in. The transfer fee as well, you’re going to get something from Mane.

“You’re looking around £35-40 million for a player that’s got one year left on his contract. That softens the blow a little bit. You’re only paying really £50million pounds then on a new striker.

“Then you’ve got to pay his wages. That’s not going to be a problem. You’re letting Origi go that’s probably been on a hell of a lot. You’re letting Mane go as well. That will probably cover it.

“This is going to give you five years longevity with a top-class, quality centre-forward. Someone that’s going to lead the line, be a natural number nine.

“I think the benefits you’re going get from Diaz and Salah, it’s going to be phenomenal. It really is.”
