Finance guru: Liverpool to ‘throw weight behind’ new legal case – ‘so many unanswered questions’

Liverpool will likely lend support to the fans who are suing Uefa over the events of the 2021-22 Champions League final in Paris.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the new legal action against European football’s governing body.

Thousands of Liverpool supporters were tear gassed and pepper sprayed indiscriminately in the build-up to the eventual 1-0 loss to Real Madrid at the Stade de France in May.

As relayed by the BBC on 23 September, over 1,700 fans who claim they were either injuried or psychologically traumatised will now launch group action against Uefa.

They will be represented by Liverpool-based law firm Bingham and global practice Pogust Godhead in the negligence case.

Uefa has since apologised to both Liverpool and Real supporters and are due to publish an independent review of the events in November.

Plumley forecasts that Liverpool, who have been commended for their support of those affected, will help in whatever way they can.

“I think, at least from a lobbying perspective, they will throw their support behind them,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“There are plenty of unanswered questions here. Liverpool have been very vocal, very supportive, and rightly so.

“I think you would expect that support to continue, maybe not from a financial perspective but from a support, lobbying and leverage perspective.”

Liverpool

The Guardian reported on 21 September that Uefa had pre-written statements blaming Liverpool fans for the chaos well in advance of the match.

The club have gathered 8,500 testimonies from supporters at the Stade de France.
