Liverpool told to offer ‘Darwin Nunez plus a lot of cash’ to land Alexander Isak

Liverpool are keen to send Darwin Nunez to Newcastle as part of their plan to land Alexander Isak this summer.

Football Insider revealed on 18 February that Nunez, 25, is valued at around £60million by Liverpool as they plan to capture the Magpies talisman.

Isak is a top target for Liverpool after his stunning form for Newcastle in the 2024-25 campaign so far, while Nunez is set to be forced out of Anfield by the Reds after failing to establish himself as a regular starter.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Newcastle could “have to look at a deal” if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Liverpool and Arsenal braced for huge Alexander Isak battle

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Nunez isn’t “anywhere near” as good as Isak and claimed Liverpool would have to offer a “lot of cash” in any part-exchange deal.

The Sweden international has hit 19 goals and contributed five assists in 29 appearances across all competitions this term – a return which dwarfs that of Nunez (see table).

Wyness insisted Arsenal will also be sniffing around Newcastle for Isak if they are vulnerable to a sale this summer.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Isak has a big target on his back for other clubs.

“Newcastle would have to get some sort of replacement built-in to any deal, I think.

“Whether they think Nunez is good enough – I don’t know.

“They could go down the route of bringing in two or three central strikers to replace him.

“That will depend on how Howe and his team see it.

“I don’t think Nunez is anywhere near as good as Isak, it would obviously be him – plus a lot of cash.

“Still, if there are serious PSR issues at Newcastle and they don’t qualify for the Champions League – they will have to look at doing a deal.

“Arsenal will be there as well and it’s a very interesting scenario.”

Newcastle could swoop for Celtic star

Football Insider has been told by ex-Man United chief scout Mick Brown (19 February) that Newcastle talent-spotters have been keeping an eye on the progress of Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn.

Kuhn has scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in 37 games across all competitions for the Glasgow giants this term.

Eddie Howe’s side have also been linked with a move for Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo of Brentford and Bournemouth respectively.
