Liverpool told to sign Naby Keita replacement as damning new details emerge – pundit

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Liverpool must look to rebuild their midfield by replacing “injury-prone” Naby Keita.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 27-year-old doesn’t have the quality to lead the Reds to Premier League or Champions League success.

Keita, who is in the final year of his Liverpool contract, is currently on the treatment table with an unspecified muscle injury.

The Guinea international has been left out of the Anfield side’s Champions League squad – which means he will be unable to play in any group games before Christmas.

Arthur Melo joined Liverpool on transfer deadline day (1 September) amid links to Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham.

Football Insider revealed last month (27 August) that the Reds are making progress on landing Bellingham following extensive behind-the-scenes talks.

Agbonlahor insisted Keita’s “injury-prone” reputation will prevent him getting a new contract.

He told Football Insider’s Connor Whitley: “I don’t think he’s got a long-term future at Liverpool.

“He doesn’t have long left on his contract, and he doesn’t do enough on the pitch, for me.

“He’s not going to take Liverpool to Premier League or Champions League glory.

“He has had his chance – but now they need to build that midfield and bring in better players.

“Injury has been a problem for him, so I don’t know why you would offer an injury-prone player a new contract.

“There’s no point putting a player in the Champions League squad who isn’t going to be fit until mid-November.”
