Liverpool told to sign 'superstar midfielder' amid 'incredible' claim - pundit

Frank McAvennie has claimed Liverpool need to sign a “superstar midfielder” to play alongside Thiago Alcantara.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker suggested Fabinho is one of a number of Reds midfielders on the decline.

The only midfielder to arrive to Anfield in the summer was Arthur Melo.

The Juventus loanee has made just one substitute appearance for the club to date because of fitness and injury problems.

Sources told Football Insider on 8 October that the Merseyside club are interested in both Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

According to ESPN (4 November), Liverpool are now leading the chase for Bellingham.

McAvennie suggested Liverpool’s star-studded forward line are being let down by their midfield teammates.

“Fabinho was never the quickest player in the world,” he told Football Insider.

“He got by with his wonderful reading of the game. To play at a top team like Liverpool, who’s aspirations are to win the league and the Champions League, you have to be playing at a top level every week.

“They need to get younger players around Thiago, ideally a superstar midfielder. I’m not sure Liverpool will get Bellingham but the midfield needs to be freshened up either way. It has to change. There is no two ways about it.

“The demand is incredible. They have got great forward players but they need a younger midfield to supply them.”

In other news, a former Fifa official has claimed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could yet receive a touchline ban after new twist in saga.
