Finance guru: Premier League ‘desperate’ to persuade Liverpool amid talks latest

The Premier League will be desperate to get Liverpool onboard for their pre-season mini-tournament.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about plans to grow the top flight’s brand overseas.

Per The Athletic last Monday (17 October), the Premier League want to establish a six-team pre-season competition outside the United Kingdom, with the United States a likely destination.

It is claimed that 14 clubs are in favour of the idea, while league officials are hopeful that at least one of the so-called Big Six will join them.

Liverpool have natural links to the American market through their Boston-based ownership group and sizable supporter base across the pond.

And Plumley suggests that they will be “top of the bill” as the Premier League lobbies for one of its star teams to enter the potentially lucrative mini-tournament.

“There is an obvious link there,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“If you are signing these deals at the league level and they generate signficant money that ultimately goes back to the clubs, they’ll be desperate to get some of the Big Six involved.

With the links to their ownership structure, Liverpool will be front and centre of this. Man United will be in that bracket as well.

If you are going to drive a tournament like that in the States, you need buy-in from big clubs.

The challenges are around how that money will be redistributed, but Liverpool will be top of the bill because of their links to other sports in America.
