Liverpool transfers: Borson ‘surprised’ by Van Dijk, Salah & Alexander-Arnold news
Liverpool have made a “strange” decision by allowing senior stars Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold to enter into the final few months of their contracts.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Merseyside giants have the financial capacity to agree new deals with those players.
Van Dijk, 33, Salah, 32, and Alexander-Arnold, 26, could be heading into their final few months with Liverpool as they are all out of contract in June 2025.
New manager Arne Slot, who has his side sitting second in the Premier League after nine games, now faces losing the experienced trio at the end of his first season at Anfield.
Saudi Pro League sides have shown an interest in potential swoops for Van Dijk and Salah in recent windows, while Alexander-Arnold has been linked with Real Madrid.
Liverpool can afford to extend star players’ contracts
Borson has been surprised by how Liverpool have handled their star players’ contract situations.
He told Football Insider: “Liverpool have got a lot of capacity from a financial fair play perspective and all of those regimes – squad-cost control and Uefa squad-cost control.
“Liverpool are well run in that respect and have always kept quite a chunky amount of capacity in their operating model.
“It’s just a choice really whether Liverpool want to spend that money.
“It seems strange the way that they have approached the contracts of Van Dijk, Salah and Trent, who are all out of contract at the end of the season.

“For a normal level of deal, they can certainly afford to renew Van Dijk’s deal.
“But it’s surprising that they’ve allowed three big players to enter the last six months of their contracts.”
