Liverpool work on A-list signing as new Alexis Mac Allister plan revealed – sources

Liverpool are working on signing defensive midfielder this summer as they prioritise a marquee capture to allow Alexis Mac Allister to play up field full-time.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Premier League giants are looking for a traditional number six this summer.

The Reds are entering a new phase with Arne Slot taking charge of the club next season, and that will be reflected in the transfer window.

Liverpool have been quiet so far regarding signings, but a defensive midfielder is a key area.

A big reason for that is that signing someone happy to sit back deeper would allow Alexis Mac Allister to play in his preferred position further up the field.

Liverpool have new plan for Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool signed Mac Allister last summer from Brighton, where he’d typically played as a number eight or in the attacking midfield role.

The Argentinian immediately became a regular under Jurgen Klopp, featuring 46 times in all competitions as he contributed with seven goals and as many assists.

However, Mac Allister was typically used as a defensive midfielder, playing over half his games in that role.

Football Insider revealed that the 25-year-old has received interest from Real Madrid, but he’s focused on continuing to develop at Anfield.

A defensive midfielder isn’t the only area Liverpool are attempting to strengthen this summer, as the club is in the market for a winger as well.

Football Insider revealed that the Premier League giants have attempted to sign Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, and while their initial bid was rejected they’re expected to return with another.

In other news, Liverpool recently gained a £4million windfall.
