The Daily Record are claiming that Celtic are on ‘red alert’ about the possibility of signing Chelsea’s Charly Musonda on-loan until the end of the season.
The 21-year-old was linked with Brendan Rodgers’ side at various times during the summer, but no moved ever materialised – and no move should materialise now.
The Premier League player is obviously very talented, but as an attacking midfielder or winger, there doesn’t seem to be a natural fit for him in the Hoops squad.
The midfielder role is covered by the likes of Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic, whilst Musonda would have to play very well to take the place of James Forrest, Scott Sinclair or Patrick Roberts on the wing.
Talking of Roberts, the other reason the Hoops should spend their January money elsewhere is to avoid making another loan signing.
The Roberts deal was unique as the club managed to get him for an 18 month loan closely followed by a 12 month deal, Musonda would only be in Glasgow until the end of May.
He wouldn’t be involved in next season’s pivotal Champions League qualifiers, the preparation for which should be beginning now.
Whilst Celtic should certainly be looking to improve their squad in January, a move for Musonda doesn’t seem like the way forward.
