‘I locked myself in my room’ – Newcastle star on comeback trail reveals start of season shame

By Guy Giles

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has revealed the crippling disappointment he felt after being sent off during his Premier League opener against Spurs, but says he is determined to put the incident behind him after his recent good form.

Shelvey saw red on the opening day after a needless stamp on Tottenham’s Dele Alli with the match evenly poised at 0-0, and Spurs capitalised to run out 2-0 winners.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday about the incident, Shelvey said: “I locked myself in my room because I did not want to speak to anyone, including my family. I just switched my phone off and turned my TV off and that was me for the rest of the night.”

The Englishman paid dearly for his mistake as he spent over a month on the bench following his dismissal.

Manager Rafa Benitez eventually reinstated Shelvey to Newcastle’s starting lineup against Liverpool on October 1, and the midfielder repaid his manager with an assist as the Magpies rescued a 1-1 draw.

Shelvey has identified the match against his former club as a turning point in his season, and spoke candidly about the effect that the red card has had on him.

He said: “I feel like the last four or five games, I have come back in a totally different mindset.

“I know for a fact that had I not come back with a different mindset, then my career would probably only go one way and I did not want that.”

Newcastle are unbeaten since Shelvey’s return against Liverpool, and lie in 8th in the Premier League with an impressive 14 points from their first nine matches.

They play Burnley on Monday night in the Premier League and will move to sixth with a win.

Shelvey has credited manager Benitez for helping him to turn both his and the team’s seasons around after an indifferent start.

“If something is not right, then you will be made to do it again and do it again which for us is very beneficial because you are constantly learning. And if you do not listen, then you are not going to play with Rafa,” he said.

In other Newcastle news, reports suggest the club are lining up a sensational move for this World Cup winner.
