‘Too long now’ – Jamie Redknapp definitively states what Newcastle must do

By Russell Edge

Jamie Redknapp has said that Newcastle United need to establish themselves as a Premier League side once again after two relegations in the past 10 years.

The Magpies saw themselves drop down to the second tier of English football at the end of the 2015/16 season, despite having appointed Champions League winning manager Rafael Benitez to replace Steve McClaren towards the end of the campaign.

The former Liverpool boss remained on Tyneside to help guide the club to the Championship title and promotion at the first time of asking, and has seen his made make a solid return to the top flight.

Now Redknapp has insisted that the club’s aim must be to solidify their position in the Premier League, stating that they have made an impressive start to the season.

Speaking on Sky Sports‘ Super Sunday (15/10, 15:30) ahead of the Magpies’ clash with Southampton, he said: ” It’s not been a bad start for Newcastle. I thought they played well at Swansea.

“They’re trying to become a stable Premier League side now. They’ve been a yo-yo side for too long now.

“With Rafa you know what you’ll get: they’ll be difficult to beat.”

So far the Magpies have picked up three wins, all successive, against West Ham, Swansea and Stoke City, while suffering defeats to Tottenham, Brighton and Huddersfield and drawing with Liverpool.

After their clash with the Saints, they face basement club Crystal Palace at St James’ Park, a trip to Burnley and then another home match against another struggling side Bournemouth.

In other Newcastle United news, fans were left raging after Benitez made this decision against the Saints.
