‘Look at this’ – West Ham fans amazed as latest footage emerges of Alvarez challenge
West Ham fans were amazed by Edson Alvarez’s “brilliant” challenge on James Milner in their draw against Brighton on Tuesday evening (2 January).
There was little to get excited about for either set of fans at the London Stadium as the Seagulls and the Hammers opened their new year with a 0-0 draw.
However, West Ham’s exceptional Mexican midfielder Alvarez caught the eye of many across the 90 minutes with his seven tackles, 87 per cent pass accuracy and eight successful ground duels.
The former Ajax man was a threat in defence and attack and used his quick feet to evade Roberto De Zerbi’s high-pressing outfit to launch counterattacks.
Perhaps his shining moment came halfway through the first half when he put in a crunching challenge on Milner to halt a dangerous move.
Billy Gilmour placed a perfect pass into the path of the former Liverpool man, but Alvarez made very quick work of nullifying the threat and lashed the ball out for a throw-in.
Since his reported £35.4million move from the Dutch giants in the summer, the 26-year-old has become a mainstay and has been vital in filling the void in defensive midfield left by Declan Rice.
West Ham fans have taken to social media to wax lyrical about his fantastic challenge, and many are adamant that his valuation has skyrocketed since his move to Stratford.
