Matthaus: These two Real Madrid players could kill Tottenham (not Ronaldo, Benzema)
By Guy Giles
Legendary German midfielder Lothar Matthaus believes that Spurs must shut down Real Madrid’s midfield if they are to secure a famous Champions League win at Wembley on Wednesday night.
Matthaus has singled out Toni Kroos and Luka Modric as the danger men for Real, and says that Spurs must not give the two pass masters any time to operate on the ball.
In his column as the Sun’s Euro expert, Matthaus said: “Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are the creative hub and, if you give them time and space, they will kill you.
“For me, that means you can’t defend from the edge of your own box. The press has to start before halfway. It’s vital Spurs put them under pressure early and don’t give them the chance to play those passes into Ronaldo, Benzema and Isco.”
Spurs managed to mostly stifle the attacking threat of Real in the first leg at the Bernabeu, with Real’s goal coming from a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.

Both teams head into the match with injury problems, with Real missing several first team stars including Gareth Bale and Raphael Varane.
Spurs have been sweating on the fitness of Harry Kane, but the England man looks to be fit as both sides, who are perfectly level at the top of Group H, aim for the win that will effectively seal qualification for the knockout stages.
In other Tottenham Hotspur news, Mauricio Pochettino has revealed a surprised rift between himself and this Tottenham mainstay.
