Lucas Bergvall breaks silence after Tottenham ‘nightmare’

Lucas Bergvall responded to Tottenham fans after making another major mistake in the side’s win against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

Tottenham completed a comeback by overturning a 1-0 deficit from the first leg to secure a 3-1 victory in the second, advancing to the Europa League quarter-finals.

Wilson Odobert played a crucial role, scoring a brace, while James Maddison also found the back of the net to seal the win for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Bergvall endured a “nightmare” performance, with a costly mix-up between him and Odobert gifting AZ Alkmaar an equaliser on aggregate, putting the tie at risk. However, Odobert’s second goal put Spurs back in control and ensured they completed the comeback.

Despite Bergvall receiving criticism for his error, the team bounced back strongly, and his resilience was acknowledged by teammates in a social media post, showing a clear sense of unity after the tense match.

Lucas Bergvall must eliminate mistakes Tottenham for Europa League success

The 19-year-old posted on Instagram after the win with the caption: “Top performance, into the next round”.

Despite his error, there were a number of Tottenham players that reacted to his post showing support including the likes of Djed Spence, Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison.

While Bergvall’s error was costly as they conceded, he has stepped up for Postecoglou’s side amid a challenging season, particularly with key injuries, such as that of Rodrigo Bentancur.

However, for the youngster to continue making an impact, he must cut out mistakes from his game. Bergvall scored an own goal against AZ Alkmaar and it was the only goal in the first-leg, meaning they needed a comeback win, but he has still largely been trusted by Postecoglou since his arrival in the summer.

He has made 37 appearances and accumulated 1830 minutes on the pitch, proving his importance to the team.

Ange Postecoglou under pressure to maintain momentum amid sack threat

Football Insider Verdict

Postecoglou continues to face increasing pressure from Tottenham fans with the team languishing in 13th in the Premier League and the Europa League now their only route to silverware this season.

However, the Australian has the backing of the Spurs hierarchy, with much of the blame has been directed at the injury crisis that has plagued the team throughout the campaign.

Despite these challenges, Postecoglou remains focused on delivering success. If he can maintain the momentum and fulfil his claim of always winning something in his second season, he will solidify his place in the club’s legacy.

However, should results falter, the shadow of the sack threat will continue to loom over him, putting additional pressure on his position.
