Lucas Digne reacts to Marco Asensio announcement at Aston Villa

Marco Asensio has claimed the attention of left-back Lucas Digne following a new announcement on social media from Aston Villa.

Villa supporters are hopeful of a permanent deal for Asensio this summer, with the attacking midfielder making quite the impact since joining on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in February.

He has already netted eight times in 12 appearances across all competitions, with another assist to add to his record, and fans at Villa Park are already falling in love with the player, some regretfully.

Fans are always told to avoid building a connection with loan players, but with Man United’s Marcus Rashford also a much-loved figure, they could be set for double heartbreak at the end of the season.

Considering how well Asensio has done during his short time in the Midlands, the club were happy to make the latest announcement surrounding the star forward.

Taking to Instagram (11 April), the club’s official account wrote: “His name is Marco, Marco Asensio. Your Player of the Month for March: Marco Asensio.”

During the month, the Spaniard netted three times in three matches, all of which came against Club Brugge, but he also played a key role in the 3-0 FA Cup win over Preston North End.

Unai Emery suffers Champions League setback against PSG

Football Insider verdict

Unai Emery will need a massive step-up from the likes of Asensio and Rashford if Villa are to advance to the Champions League semi-finals, having lost 3-1 in the first leg to PSG.

Morgan Rogers had put the Villans in dreamland with the opening goal at the Parc des Princes, only for Desire Doue, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nuno Mendes to put his side to the sword after that.

Ollie Watkins has certainly not been at his best for Villa in recent weeks, even despite notching 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions, so Rashford is likely to get more chances up front.

While the Champions League title would be incredible to lift this season, the FA Cup trophy is also on the cards at Villa Park, and the fans will not want Emery forgetting about that.

With only Villa, Crystal Palace, Man City and Nottingham Forest left in the competition, it is far more likely that they win that piece of silverware, but Emery will be eager for both with this current squad.
