Lucas Paqueta is furious with four West Ham stars after what expert saw

Lucas Paqueta is “fed up” with West Ham United’s “awful” defenders.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed the “genius” Paqueta, 26, should be forgiven for his frequent yellow cards as he is often forced into action due to the shaky backline behind him.

The Brazilian picked up a yellow card in the Irons’ 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last week (11 April), which saw him miss the crucial second leg on Thursday night(18 April).

Following another booking in West Ham’s 2-0 loss against Fulham on Sunday (14 April), fans grew frustrated with Paqueta’s discipline.

The yellow against the Cottagers brought Paqueta’s total booking tally to 12 in all competitions this season – second only behind Edson Alvarez’s 15.

However, McAvennie admitted he would cut the midfielder “some slack” due to his outstanding contribution to the side.

“He’s such a talented player and I understand that the fans are saying he can be petulant,” he told Football Insider.

“But sometimes geniuses, like him, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen, are such good players that they must be fed up with the defending.

“What have they been doing? They’ve been awful at times.

“I’ll cut Paqueta some slack for his yellow cards because I think he’s done more good for West Ham than bad.

“But I understand the fans’ frustration, especially with him being unavailable in Europe [against Leverkusen].”
