Luis Diaz: Brighton star should get extended ban as ‘unbelievable’ Liverpool footage analysed – ex-Fifa official

Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez should have received a straight red card for “serious foul play” against Liverpool on Saturday.

That is according to former Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “clearest red card you could see.”

As shown by footage from BT Sport (12 March), Sanchez, 24, clattered into Luis Diaz as the winger put the Reds 1-0 up at the Amex Stadium.

However, Mike Dean did not adjudge the incident to be worthy of a red card.

VAR official Stuart Attwell chose not to send on-field referee Dean to the monitor for a second look after deeming that there was no clear and obvious error.

Hackett is adamant the incident was “serious foul play” and suggested Sanchez should have received a three-match ban.

“This is the clearest red card you could see,” he told Football Insider assistant editor.

“As the forward covered the challenge, maybe Mike Dean has not seen it and that can happen. That is why I waited for Stuart Attwell to come in but he didn’t. I couldn’t believe it.

“The goal was not enough. From my perspective, it was a red card for serious foul play. It fulfilled everything for the criteria.”

Speaking to Sky Sports about the incident, Jurgen Klopp said (13 March): “It’s a very good example of the issues we have with VAR.

“Mike Dean sees the goal and maybe isn’t even thinking about a red card as the assistant referee is looking for offside but then there is an issue with ‘clear and obvious’. This phrase is the real problem.
