Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo react to Virgil van Dijk amid Liverpool contract updates
Liverpool stars Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo reacted to Virgil van Dijk on social media after the Reds took one step closer to the Premier League title.
The Reds watched rivals Arsenal stumble to a 1-1 draw against Brentford on Saturday (12 April), a result which meant the league leaders were just three wins away from a second Premier League title this century.
West Ham have been in miserable form since appointing Graham Potter, and a win over the East London side looked like a tap-in.
However, having taken an early lead through Diaz, an own-goal from Andy Robertson seemed to have condemned Liverpool to back-to-back disappointing results, having lost to Fulham the previous weekend.
That was until captain Van Dijk took matters into his own hands, as the Dutchman headed past Alphonse Areola in the 89th minute to give his side an invaluable three points.
Virgil van Dijk’s heroics move Liverpool one step closer to Premier League title
Now just two wins away from being crowned the champions of England, Van Dijk posted a series of photo’s to Instagram, captioned with a heart-eyes emoji.
Diaz responded with two fire emojis, whilst Gakpo responded with a bullseye and a fire emoji, showing their support for the match-winner.
Liverpool will head to the Midlands to face a Leicester side staring down the barrel of relegation next, on Sunday (20 April).
Liverpool make Ibrahima Konate contract extension ‘top priority’
Football Insider Verdict
The contract sagas surrounding Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk have utterly dominated Arne Slot’s first season in charge.
Whilst the Egyptian has agreed a deal to remain at Anfield for the next two seasons, the Reds’ English right-back is almost certainly on his way to Real Madrid next season.
Van Dijk, whilst yet to commit his future one way or another, seems more likely to remain with Liverpool next season.
However, the Reds’ captain will be 34 years old in July and Liverpool are already looking at Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth to join the club this summer.
After the contract drama this season, Liverpool have made Ibrahima Konate’s contract extension the “top priority”, as they look to avoid a similar scenario next season.
The Frenchman’s deal expires in 2026, and Real Madrid and PSG are understood to be keen on the 25-year-old.
