Luis Suarez in advanced talks over major new MLS agreement

Luis Suarez is in advanced talks to extend his stay in the MLS in a deal that will see him go close to playing into his 40s.

Lionel Messi signed a new contract at Inter Miami in October that will see him through to the end of the 2028 MLS season.

The Argentine provided two assists against Vancouver Whitecaps as his side won the MLS Cup final at the start of the month, for their first time since their 2018 formation.

Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets announced their retirement at the end of the year, with Inter Miami signing Sergio Reguilon to replace the former, but Messi and Suarez are expected to continue.

Messi will play in his final World Cup in 2026, with the footballing legend still hoping to make even more history before hanging up his boots.

Luis Suarez enters advanced talks with Inter Miami

Barcelona and Liverpool legend Suarez joined Inter Miami in 2024, signing on a free transfer after leaving Brazilian club Gremio.

The striker rolled back the years in his first campaign, scoring 25 goals and providing 12 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.

And despite his age, the 39-year-old has continued to thrive, netting 17 across all competitions this year.

Inter Miami have signed several of Messi’s former teammates, including Rodrigo De Paul, who has become a permanent signing following his loan move from Atletico Madrid.

Busquets and Alba both made the move in 2023, joining Messi at the David Beckham co-owned MLS club. Amid both players’ decisions to retire from football, however, Suarez has decided to extend his stay.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that the veteran striker is in advanced talks with Inter Miami to stay at the club for one more season.

Luis Suarez hinted at Inter Miami last dance

Suarez will be remembered as a footballing legend when he does eventually hang up his boots.

For now, though, the Urguayan is enjoying his football in the MLS, and had already hinted at a final stint at Inter Miami.

Posting on social media after he had scored the 600th goal of his career in October, Suarez wrote: “If I say that I dreamed it, I’m lying, I never thought I’d achieve something like this in my career.

“Thanks to all the clubs I was at, to the National Team, to my teammates, coaches, officials, to my family and to the fans. Everyone is part of this achievement. ‘There is always one more page…'”

That page will be written with Inter Miami, as Suarez looks to end his career with one final flourish.
