Luton Town handed Premier League boost as documents submitted – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Luton Town’s new stadium is essential if they are to have “another crack” at the Premier League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Hatters “can’t get away with having a plucky, brave squad” if they want promotion back to the top flight.

Luton announced last week (24 September) that the planning process for their new Power Court stadium has now been formally and successfully validated.

The Bedfordshire club plan to build a 25,000-seater stadium, music venue and hotel at the development.

Kenilworth Road, which required extensive remodelling following promotion to the Premier League, currently only holds just over 12,000 fans.

Luton were relegated to the Championship for the 2024-25 campaign and Rob Edwards’ side have started poorly, winning just two from eight second-tier games.

Luton new stadium essential to another Premier League promotion, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think Luton identified this site before they even got to the Premier League.

“Since about 2016, they’d been looking for new sites.

“They hope this new stadium will house a Premier League team at some point – they’ve already had a taste of it.

“They believe that to compete in the Championship and have a chance at that promotion, you’ve got to have the best facilities.

“There are some big clubs in the Championship, and they can’t get away with having a plucky, brave squad every year.

“They need to be a professional outfit with the right revenues to have another crack at doing it.

“That’s what they’re trying to build for the future. You’ve got to be so well-equipped and well-run to have a chance now.”
