Mac Allister, Gakpo react as Diaz sends ‘closer’ message amid Liverpool exit talk

Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo have shown their support for Liverpool teammate Luis Diaz amid the ongoing speculation around his future.

The attacker played an important role for the Reds this season, helping them to claim the Premier League title in Arne Slot‘s first year in charge, but there has still been uncertainty around his future.

In the lead-up to the transfer window, there have been claims that Barcelona have identified Diaz as a target this summer.

Although Liverpool are baffled suggestions they are looking to sell Diaz they apparently have no plans to hold contract talks with him, who has two years remaining on his current deal at Anfield.

Luis Diaz reflects on Colombia outing amid transfer speculation

Given every player has a price, there is still a possibility the attacker could be sold this summer amid that interest in him.

Football Insider understands that Liverpool could demand up to £70million to sell Diaz in the current transfer window.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old was in action for the Colombian national team early on Wednesday (11 June), scoring a stunning solo goal in a 1-1 draw with Argentina in World Cup qualifying.

That result means Colombia need just one win from their remaining two qualifiers – to be played in September – to secure their place in next year’s tournament in North America.

Taking to Instagram to reflect on that result, Diaz wrote: “We’re one point closer to our goal. We have a great team and we played a great game against a great opponent. Vamos Colombia”.

In response, Gakpo paid tribute to his Liverpool teammate by commenting on that post with a series of flame emojis.

Meanwhile, Mac Allister – who did not feature in that game for Argentina after missing the end of the season due to injury – gave his backing to Diaz by liking that post.

Liverpool stance a sensible one

Football Insider Verdict

This goal from Diaz was another reminder of how good he can be, and shows why his club’s approach to his situation seems to be correct.

The attacker has and clearly can continue to make significant contributions for Liverpool, which will be important as they go in search of more silverware next season.

In that respect it makes little sense for them to actively look to sell the Colombia international, although they are also playing it smartly by being open to offers.

If they are not going to agree a new contract with him, then it makes sense for them to leave the door open for a sale, rather than risk missing out on a windfall if Diaz leaves for free when his deal expires.

With that in mind, it seems there is still plenty to be decided when it comes to the 28-year-old’s future at Liverpool in the next year or so.
