Everton boss

Alex Bruce insists Everton have made a great decision in reportedly offering Leighton Baines a new contract at Goodison Park.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Premier League centre-back claims the 35-year-old is a “valuable” asset both on and off the pitch.

The BBC report that Baines has been offered a new one-year deal to stay at Goodison Park in a move which would allow him to see out his career on Merseyside.

Having seen Baines spend the last 13 years at Goodison Park, Bruce insists that his experience off the pitch is as, if not more, important than his “magical” left foot on the field.

Bruce told Football Insider: “You need experienced players around the dressing room and he knows the ins and outs of the club after being there a number of years.

“I saw him play not long ago against Manchester United and he still does a job, he’s got a magical left foot, he offers a threat from set-pieces and stuff.

“A good player to have in the squad even though he’s in his latter years now. He’s still going to be valuable on the pitch and even more so off it.”

Baines joined the Toffees from Wigan back in 2007 and has gone on to play 417 times for the club.

However, he has dropped behind Lucas Digne in the pecking order over the last two seasons, with just six appearances under his belt.

In other Everton news, Southampton’s stance on selling a first-team ace to the Toffees has been REVEALED by Football Insider.
