Kieran Maguire: Man City ‘cheering’ as major windfall on the cards after Arsenal ruling

Chelsea and Man City “will be cheering” after Arsenal were cleared of transfer wrongdoing, according to Kieran Maguire.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the finance guru claimed Mikel Arteta’s old club City are likely to be one of those who benefit the most after Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned Fifa on a dispute regarding sell-on clauses.

The Gunners had clauses inserted into the transfer deals that took Chuba Akpom to PAOK and Joel Campbell to Froisnone in 2018.

These proved controversial in the eyes of the world governing body as the Premier League club included larger percentages if either man got sold back to British clubs.

Fifa believed the clauses handed Arsenal influence over the buying clubs’ and hit them with a £34,000 fine and warned them over their future conduct.

But Arsenal decided to appeal that decision and it has been overturned this week by CAS.

That will benefit clubs who bulk their squads up with youthful talent and look to sell on for a major profit.

“There will be a lot of cheering at the clubs that have a player development model, the likes of Chelsea and Man City,” Maguire told Football Insider.

“This means they can maximise their returns. As far as Arsenal are concerned, the sums involved in these cases are not huge.

“But, the longer term implications are very beneficial for them and other clubs who replicate such an approach. It’s a pivotal ruling.”

Costa Rican Campbell moved on to Mexico with Leon but the clause was relevant with regards to Akpom as he was sold to Championship side Middlesbrough for £2.25m a year ago.

CAS concluded that the London giants did not gain any influence over either player and that they no longer have to pay the fine.

In other news, Man City have responded to £15million bid from Borussia Dortmund.
