Major development in Tottenham £20m-a-yr stadium sponsor search as Levy takes control – report
By Richard Parks
Tottenham have axed sponsorship specialists TRM as chairman Daniel Levy takes full control of the club’s extensive search to secure a naming rights deal, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim that Levy has wielded the axe after TRM failed to meet his ambitious target for a £400million title sponsor for the club’s new stadium.
It is said that the long-standing White Hart Lane chief is holding out for a £20million-a-year deal over 20 years.
Tottenham are in talks with a number of potential sponsors, but Levy said at a meeting with the Tottenham Supporters’ Trust two weeks ago that the ground will be known as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until a suitable sponsor is found.
There has been speculation in recent times that Levy has held talks with potential investors across the globe, including in the Middle East, about becoming Spurs’ naming rights partner.
Football Insider verdict:
Levy is playing a waiting game as he holds out for the most lucrative deal he can get. The canny Spurs chief is aware that stadium naming rights is an increasingly significant revenue stream available to Premier League clubs as they look to follow the United States model. Arsenal, Man City, Leicester, Stoke and Brighton have all granted stadium naming rights to their grounds in recent years, and more are expected to follow as finance experts insist that potential sums on offer are considerably higher than previously. Spurs need to secure the biggest Premier League deal yet, as the cost of the new stadium has been hiked from an initial £400million to £1billion, making it the most expensive in Europe.
