Kieran Maguire: '£400m' transfer reveal has gone 'under the radar' at Man City

Man City are world-renowned for their huge transfer spend – but they are just at good at generating income through sales.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about recent data released by CIES Football Observatory.

The figures, published by CIES on 8 November, reveal that City have the most sustainable squad in the Premier League.

City are second only to Real Sociedad in the index of European clubs, which accounts for player age, average stay in the first team, and contract length.

Maguire revealed that City’s sustainable model has allowed them to trouser £400million in player sales since 2015.

“Having a sustainable squad is big for Manchester City,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“What goes under the radar with them is player sales. Everyone associates them with spending money, but they are very good at generating money too.

“If you look at the numbers since 2015, they have generated £400m from player sales. That allows them to reinvest.

“City have a definitive model when it comes to player recruitment. They are looking for players from that 20 to 24 age bracket

“They can then sell them at a profit down the line. It is a very strategic approach that Man City have towards recruitment.

“They don’t sign good footballers, they sign good footballers who’ll fit into the City model. That in turn makes the players look even better than they are.

“They’ve sold Leroy Sane, Jack Harrison and Angelino in recent times. They are very smart in this squad model and think outside the box all the time.”
