Man City accelerate huge rebuild – ‘the squad is in a complete mess’

Man City have had a season to forget which could see them completely miss out on Champions League football which is why Pep Guardiola is looking to complete a complete overhaul of the squad.

City are currently fifth in the Premier League table, but they will be overtaken by Newcastle if Eddie Howe’s team wins their game in hand which will put their Champions League aspirations in jeopardy.

The defending Premier League champions spent £180million during the January transfer window to try and fix the problems, but Guardiola has been unable to get his team back consistently picking up points.

The FA Cup is City’s only opportunity to win any silverware this season after being knocked out of the EFL Cup and the Champions League, which will lower the money they will earn from their on-field performance.

However, that has never stopped City from splashing the cash and it is expected that City will be doing exactly that when the summer transfer window opens.

Industry insider Mick Brown has revealed that City plan to sign five top-class players who will be able to go straight into the starting lineup for next season.

Man City need to invest in more ‘quality’

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson revealed he thinks City need to add “two or three younger players” in the summer transfer window.

He’s always done well at Manchester City Pep at rejuvenating that squad every year,” Robinson told Football Insider.

And you look at the signings this season, [it] was only Savinho wasn’t it, that came in in the summer compared to the normal rotation of players that he has.

“He is interested in a rebuild because you look at what they spent in January and you look at the age of those players that they’ve brought in, you say, it’s a huge rebuild, it’s a mess at Manchester City.

“It’s not. You look at the age of their squad, what he’s brought in now, and players that are already there. you take that group of players and you add another two or three younger players of quality with two or three of those older experienced players you can see what Pep’s trying to do.

“They’re the future of Manchester City.

“A couple of maybe the likes of Dias, John Stones, Kovačić, the younger element of those experienced players stick around, mix with the youth that he’s bringing in and already brought in.

They’ve got a very, very bright future ahead of them.”
