Finance guru: Man City have 'football's hottest property' amid 'dream' Giambattista Rossi reveal

Not only did Man City get one of football’s “hottest properties” when they sign Erling Haaland – but they also bought invaluable commercial appeal.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Norwegian striker’s global superstardom.

City completed the signing of Haaland, 22, from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth an initial £51million in June.

He has begun the season in blister-hot form, netting 12 times in his opening eight games.

Discussing the non-footballing impact of blockbuster signings, sports industry expert Giambattista Rossi told The Athletic last Sunday (11 September): “You are selling dreams. That is what gets people to buy tickets and TV subscriptions.”

City were world football’s biggest revenue generator in the last recorded financial year, and that was driven primarily by their £271m commercial income.

Plumley insists that this will have factored into City’s thinking before they broke the bank for Haaland.

“This absolutely comes into it,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“We look at the hottest properties in world football and we think Ronaldo and Messi. But if we look at what is coming next, the two words on everyone’s lips are Haaland and Mbappe.

“For City to sign Haaland was one thing in terms of what he is doing on the pitch but it also creates a different buzz and gets the world looking at the club.

“Part of what you’re buying is the footballer, but you’re also buying the bigger picture. There are only a few footballers who command that level.”
