Man City controversy: Fans react to shock VAR twist after analysing latest footage

John Stones’ winning goal for Man City against Wolves has left fans incensed after a controversial refereeing call was given in their favour.

Pep Guardiola’s side left it late to secure a 2-1 win at Molineux after Stones’ late goal snatched all three points, following strikes from Jorgen Strand Larsen and Josko Gvardiol.

However, the 97th-minute header was shrouded in controversy after referee Chris Kavanagh was sent to the VAR screen to check for a potential offside.

There was a suggestion that Bernardo Silva had interfered with the goalkeeper’s line of sight, preventing him from making the save, but those claims were dismissed as the referee awarded the goal despite being told to review his initial call.

Kavanagh’s decision to stick to his guns left rival fans fuming as City took all three points, capitalising on Arsenal’s defeat to Bournemouth on 19 October in the title race.

After City picked up another win following a controversial refereeing decision, fans have pointed to the ongoing charges against the club, while insisting they have “cheated” again.

City were the better side on the day and dominated possession despite struggling to break down Wolves’ defensive line until the late header.

However, Kavanagh’s decision to award the goal despite recommendations otherwise has raised questions about the legitimacy of Stones’ winner.

After the VAR footage from the incident was shown live on Sky Sports, supporters took to social media in anger as they labelled City “cheats” and the decision “shocking”.
